  • Information about the biotope rainforest

The tropical rainforest of Tropical Islands is a biotope that is kept in ecological balance, by many microorganisms and insects. They are all a necessary component and make their contribution by, for example, aerating the soil and performing other useful tasks. Please be aware that you may encounter one or more of the occupants outside their usual habitat.

The Pycnoscelus surinamensis, also known as the Surinam cockroach or greenhouse cockroach, prefers to live in warm, damp soil areas. For ecological reasons, we cannot do without our cockroaches and beetles, which are neither harmful nor dangerous. They help to turn the leaves lying on the ground into soil in the planting beds. Their number is also monitored. Free-range golden pheasants and Chinese pygmy quails, peacocks and geckos in our tropical rainforest help provide a natural balance. You are bound to bump into them on your tour of discovery. Since they are wild animals, please remember they must not be touched or fed.

Kupu Kupu: the house of butterflies

In the middle of the rainforest, about 150 butterflies have found a home in our new 42 square meter enclosure. The name "Kupu Kupu" comes from Indonesian and means "butterfly".

Exotic butterfly species such as the large Mormon, the common Mormon, the blue swift or the greenish Papilio palinurus, also known as the emerald green swallowtail, come from Southeast Asia and are not native to our latitudes. Tropical Islands offers perfect conditions for species-appropriate care and up-close observation of their fascinating development cycles, from caterpillar to pupa to colourful adult.
